Sports science researchers from ECU are collaborating with the Singapore Sports Council and Auckland University of Technology to examine the effects of exercise in extreme tropical conditions. The team will be at the Aviva 70.3 Singapore Ironman this Sunday to examine why humans fatigue during exercise in hot and humid climates, specifically over long distances and in gruelling conditions. The Singapore Ironman event sees 1000 triathletes complete a 1.9 kilometre ocean swim, 90 kilometre bike race and a 21 kilometre half-marathon run. The research team, led by ECU's Dr Paul Laursen will be fitting athletes with heart rate monitors and foot-pods to measure heart and running speeds. Athletes will also swallow an ingestible core temperature pill. ECU's Professor Ken Nosaka will be looking at muscle performance during the race, and the level of muscle damage experienced in such hot conditions. Local Singaporean ECU Sports Science students will also be assisting in the research. Check out the Sports Science In Singapore video on YouTube. |
