Sports science is a unique scientific
discipline that comprises the areas of physiology, nutrition, biomechanics
and psychology. These scientific principles and techniques are primarily used
to further enhance and improve the sporting individual. Only till recently
that sports science has been widely recognised as having an integral part in
an elite athletes’ sporting achievements. The roles and responsibilities that
every sports scientist has to do are very much important and critical to
every elite athlete. This seminar will therefore discuss on one
of the major sports science areas, that is the role of an exercise
physiologist in an elite sporting environment connectivity. |

About the Speaker: |

|||||||
|
Faizul specialises in skill-based sports
such as bowling, fencing and shooting. He is also leading Singapore Sports
Institute’s Recovery Services both within Singapore and at overseas
competitions. He is currently leading a project on the optimal recovery strategies
for elite athletes. Further developing SSI’s recovery methods
and modalities is a key area for the Sport Science Department and Faizul led
this support at SEA Games (2007 & 2009) and the Asian Youth Games (2008).
Research is also one of Faizul’s interest where he recently presented an oral
and poster presentation on effects of Ramadan fasting on selected physical
performances at a renown regional conference. Faizul also leads SSIs
physiological support programme for the Singapore Slingers basketball team
where he has been with them since 2006. Faizul is also a certified United Sates
Professional Tennis Registry tennis coach and has had extensive elite
coaching experience both locally and overseas. With his coaching background,
Faizul has been able to integrate his knowledge from a coaches’ point of view
and merge that into his current professional job Faizul graduated with a bachelor of science
majoring in sports science from Edith Cowan University, Australia. He is a
certified Level 1 Sports Trainer and Sports First Aider from Australia and is
also a certified Level 2 Anthropometrist accredited by the International
Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Faizul is also
certified in basic Sports Massage. |

The Exercise and Sports Science
Degree is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain an
in-depth knowledge and sound practical skills in a variety of disciplines
taught within the program. The degree has specialised
teaching and research facilities in the areas of Anatomy, Biomechanics,
Exercise Physiology, Motor Control, Psychology and Exercise of Sport,
Rehabilitation, Skill Acquisition and Strength Conditioning. The broad scope of the course
leads to a range of employment prospects related to health, corporate and
community fitness, coaching, teaching and research. Students have the option
to specialise in Exercise & Rehabilitation (4th year) |
